About this book
The King's Post is credited to Robert Charles Tombs. The book describes itself as “a volume of historical facts relating to the Posts, Mail Coaches, Coach Roads, and Railway Mail Services of and connected with the Ancient City of Bristol from 1580 to the present time.” The volume is dedicated to the Right Hon. Lord Stanley, His Majesty's Postmaster-General, as a testimony of high appreciation of his devotion to the public service.
A recommendation given at Bristoll on the 14th day of Aprill 1660 asks that John Teage, who had been Postmaster there for many years, be continued in his said place. The text says that stealing a letter or robbing the mail was a capital offence long after Hawkins and Sympson expiated their offences on the scaffold. A speaker wanted his hearers to recognise that the Postmaster-General's good intentions, and they were many, were controlled by Parliamentary and statutory exigencies.
