About this book

Edward R. Pease writes from inside the organisation he served as secretary for twenty-five years. Published in 1916, his account follows the Fabian Society from its foundations in 1883 and 1884 through its lectures, pamphlets, policy arguments and growing links with organised labour. Bernard Shaw and Sidney Webb appear as colleagues who helped shape both the society's work and the writing of this history.

The political detail is often practical. Pease describes a proposal for publicly funded school meals and recounts his own part in forming the Labour Representation Committee in 1900. His account of representing a small society alongside much larger trade unions shows how negotiating rules could matter as much as making speeches. Readers interested in British social reform will find an insider's record of how ideas moved through committees, publications and public institutions, with the author's sympathies plainly visible.
