About this book

History of the Cathedral Church of Wells is by Edward A. Freeman. The preface says the volume is a reprint, with hardly any change, of three lectures given to a local society in Wells in the months of December 1869 and January 1870. The preface adds that the writer has added some notes and references, but the substance is essentially the same.

The writer says he wishes to treat the history of Wells Cathedral, both as a building and as an institution, in a more general, in what he may call a comparative, way. The writer says that for the first portion this evening he purposes to take as his subject the early days of the church of Saint Andrew. The text mentions Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury, who sat from 1329 to 1363, as famous.
