About this book
The history covers the Order of the Garter and other orders of knighthood existing in Europe. The title page announces accounts of habits, ensigns and officers, together with ceremonies of election, investiture and installation. The announced subjects include feasts and the duties and fees payable on ceremonial occasions.
The description of an officer's habit records a crimson satin mantle commanded by Queen Mary and a change to scarlet at the Restoration. The ceremonial account assigns twelve waiting gentlemen of the privy chamber to carry the canopy at the feast. The sovereign's long mantle train is carried by several young members of the nobility, notified through the lord chamberlain of the household.
