About this book
This is a reference work on English families, titled in full as notes touching the arms and descents of the ancient knightly and gentle houses of England, arranged in their respective counties. Evelyn Philip Shirley's name appears on the title page with his degrees and his past service as a knight of the shire for the county of Warwick. This edition is called the third, corrected, and is dated 1866.
The entries sampled are short family histories. The Harcourt entry traces a pedigree to a Robert de Harcourt, grandson of a man who went to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and says that after the last Earl Harcourt died in 1830 the male-line representation passed to the Ankerwycke family. The Lovett entry begins with Vitalis Lovett of Rushton in the reign of Henry II. The Mitford entry places that family at Mitford Castle. Entries give arms in heraldic wording, such as Gules, two bars or, and cite printed works.
