About this book
The History of University Education in Maryland is a work by Bernard C. Steiner, carrying the date March-April, 1891. The contents list names, among others, Colonial Attempts to found a College, The First University of Maryland, The Second University of Maryland and Cokesbury College. The volume names Supplementary Notes on University Extension and the University of the Future, by R.G. Moulton.
St. John's College is described as chartered in 1784, two years after the founding of Washington College, and as to be placed at Annapolis. The text says the provisions of the act were never carried out, and that two fruitless attempts were made to hold sessions of Convocation in 1790 and 1791. In his inaugural address, the President of the Johns Hopkins University called attention to some of the special distinctions of the gift, among them the freedom from conditions, the absence of political or ecclesiastical control and the connection with an endowed hospital.
