About this book
My Country, 'tis of Thee! is by Willis Fletcher Johnson, with the alternative title The United States of America; Past, Present and Future. The title page promises great issues of the future, as viewed by our most prominent editors and eminent men of our country, including President Harrison, Ex-President Cleveland, and Senator Sherman.
A narrative of Karlsefne says the river was too shallow to allow the ships to enter without high water, and that Karlsefne sailed with his men into its mouth and named the place Hop. The text says that, as long as the red cloth held out, relations with the Skraelings, as they had named the natives, continued friendly. The text asks the reader to suppose that, instead of selecting men merely for their physical quality and their supposed capacity for obedience, the standard of admission to the ranks of the army should be as high as that of admission to West Point.
