About this book

An elderly Methuselah worries about changing manners, unfamiliar expressions, and the young members of his family taking their canoes onto the Euphrates. Eugene Field turns these ancient names into a recognizable household, where a grandfather's complaints and affection share the same breath. The enormous ages of his characters add to the joke: even men well into their nineties can still seem like troublesome boys.

The Holy Cross and Other Tales collects short fiction in several moods, from playful comedy to serious and sorrowful writing. Its introductory note identifies five added tales beginning with The Platonic Bassoon. In the Methuselah passage, formal, old-fashioned speech meets ordinary family concerns, and gentle amusement sits beside grief for a son. Readers interested in Field's prose can find here the humor and tenderness that the introduction also associates with his verse.
