Within this peaceful setting, Nanna feels the strain of poverty and social rank. Her father, Carl Lonner, has lost the prospects of his early life, while her sister-in-law Magde offers the affection and care that Nanna needs. Seeing Magde in tears leaves the girl anxious before an unfamiliar young traveller approaches the spring where she sits.
Family affection shares the page with pointed conversations about money, manners and marriage. Aunt Ulrica urges her nephew Gottlieb toward a wealthy match, but he insists that affection must guide his choice. The contrast between the cottage and these calculations gives readers a close view of household loyalties and social ambition, with rural description and lively dialogue carrying the story.
