About this book

A quiet passenger bound for India attracts more attention than she seeks in L. Allen Harker's novel. Janet Ross, known as Jan, boards a ship at Marseilles during Christmas week, and her fellow travellers speculate about her age and purpose. She explains that she is making her first visit to her younger sister and intends to accompany her home. The opening uses shipboard chatter and intrusive questions to show how quickly strangers form judgments.

Family care becomes a practical concern in the later excerpt, where Jan talks with Meg, the nurse looking after Tony and little Fay. Their conversation touches on trust, money, social standing and the discomfort of meeting disapproving acquaintances. Plans turn toward Wren's End, a house with a garden and an unusual rule protecting its nesting birds. Published in 1917, the novel offers domestic scenes and observant dialogue about responsibility and the claims people make on one another.
