About this book
Two small children shelter beneath an awning in a damaged boat as their Indian nurse saves her remaining water to soften biscuit for them. The narrator reveals that he was one of those children, making this scene the starting point for a sea adventure shaped by survival and faith in divine protection. Set against the Indian Ocean, the novel connects moments of extreme helplessness with acts of care.
A later passage follows Mark as he accompanies Captain Van Deck's widow and little Maria towards her relatives. Fellow sailors contribute money for their expenses, while the widow worries about how her family will receive her. Their route takes them past post houses, palm groves and rice fields, giving the narrative space to describe farming and travel ashore. Readers of older maritime fiction will find religious reflection alongside danger at sea and careful attention to the practical work of everyday life.
