About this book
A sleepless night at Fort House turns Uncle George's reluctant duties as a family protector into something far more alarming. The elderly narrator has come to the gloomy North Carolina mansion shortly before his nephew, Doctor Lewis Parker, is to marry Dorothy McGregor. Midnight brings clanking noises, breaking crockery and a piercing cry, giving George's fears of a haunting a disturbing shape.
Ernest M. Poate sets this detective story among wedding preparations, anxious relatives and suspicions that threaten the young couple's future. When Lewis faces a grave charge and imprisonment, Dorothy insists that their wedding should go ahead and places her confidence in Doctor Somers. George's observations mix personal worry with dry humor.
