This detective novel joins its fire investigation to questions of inheritance and succession. A later scene takes Emily Barlow into Shagarach's home, where conversation with him and his mother turns to family history, exile and Spinoza. The contrast between public emergency and private conversation gives readers several kinds of evidence to weigh: what people notice, what they remember and how differently they behave at home and at work.
