About this book
Fire serves as Manly P. Hall's guiding symbol for the spiritual life in these illustrated essays from 1922. The introduction places figures from several religious traditions within a shared account of service and inward development. Hall argues that religious names and outward forms can conceal a common divine source. His foreword then presents everyday experience as a school in which understanding must be earned through conduct.
The chapter headings move from an altar flame to Shamballa, alchemy, Egyptian initiation, the Ark of the Covenant, the Grail and the pyramids. In the Egyptian passage, a ruler's crown, apron and sceptres become signs of discipline over body, feeling and thought. These are Hall's symbolic readings rather than a straightforward historical account. The book offers readers interested in occult thought a way to study how one writer joins religious images, temple objects and legends into an argument about spiritual responsibility.
