About this book
An ordinary building tool becomes a lesson in moral conduct in Albert Gallatin Mackey's account of Masonic symbolism. He uses the plumb as an example of how a physical object can represent upright behavior, and treats traditional legends as vehicles for philosophical ideas rather than as documented history. The book examines the meanings attached to lodge forms, ritual clothing, light, labor and stories associated with Solomon's temple.
Mackey's argument depends on distinguishing the fraternity's underlying teachings from its changing ceremonies. He weighs several interpretations of the Hiram legend and challenges an exclusively Christian reading, arguing that members of different faiths can share its lessons. Readers studying religious symbolism or the history of ideas can follow his method of connecting objects and narratives with beliefs about God, human conduct and life beyond death. The account presents his own claims about Masonic origins and meaning, including points on which he disputes other writers.
