About this book
The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln is by F. B. Carpenter. The writer says he does not intend to follow in detail the progress of the work, but that allusions to it will be unavoidable throughout these pages as the thread upon which are strung his memories of the late President. The writer says the state dining-room was finally assigned him for a studio instead of the library.
The writer says that when a stranger approaching the President in a low tone turned an inquiring eye toward the place where he sat, the reply was that the stranger need not mind him, since he is but a painter. A scene with Mr. Lincoln has him pause for long minutes, his features surcharged with emotion, and walk up and down the reception-room in the effort to retain or regain his self-possession. The text says that Mr. Lincoln cared nothing for simple facts, manners, modes and ways, but did care for truth, right, principle and all that pertains to the good.
