About this book

The early life of Abraham Lincoln is by Ida M. Tarbell. The title page says the book contains many unpublished documents and unpublished reminiscences of Lincoln’s early friends. The title page also gives 160 illustrations, including 20 portraits of Lincoln.

The text says Mr. Roll reports that whenever Lincoln ended a story in his unexpected way the boys on the log would whoop and roll off, which polished the log like a mirror, and that the men, recognizing Lincoln’s part in this polishing, christened their seat “Abe’s log.” The text says the third of the nine children in the Rutledge household was a daughter, Ann Mayes, born in Kentucky, January 7, 1813. The text says Thomas Lincoln and Dennis Hanks were both famous story-tellers, and the Lincolns spent many a cozy evening about their cabin fire, repeating the stories they knew.
