The Inner Life is by Rufus M. Jones, who is described on the title page as professor of philosophy in Haverford College. The introduction says there is no inner life that is not also an outer life. The author wonders whether some pin-hole peeps in the gospels might let readers see the marvelous inner world, the extraordinary spiritual life, of a Person whose outer biography so baffles us.
The text says Isaiah saw the Lord with His train filling the temple, felt his lips cleansed, and heard a call asking who will go. The writer says that experience and knowledge of the outer and inner universe confirm our faith that God is also immanent, a real presence, a spiritual reality, immediately to be felt and known, a vital, life-giving environment of the soul. The writer says we cannot think finite and contingent things, or aim at goodness however fragmentary, without rational appeal to something infinite and necessary.
