About this book
Henry Charles Lea writes here about the Inquisition in the territories under Spanish rule. The pages sampled quote and summarise official papers: a letter from Charles V to his viceroy dated October 22, 1525, a royal cédula of August 25, 1526 that takes the inquisitors and their officials under royal protection, and repeated petitions from the Sicilian Parliament.
Another passage describes an edict of March 2, 1600 that prohibited crosses and images of Christ, the Virgin and the saints carved, painted or embroidered on furniture, bedding and household objects. Fray Diego Múñoz, commissioner at Mechoacan, issued instructions to his delegate at Querétaro on how to apply it. The text also reproduces Spanish-language documents, and the transcriber notes that Spanish words and accent marks were left as printed. The book has a contents list, an index and footnotes.
