About this book

The Ivory Gate is by Walter Besant, who is named as author of All Sorts and Conditions of Men. A note says that after this novel was commenced in Chambers's Journal it was discovered that the title had already been used by the late Mr. Mortimer Collins, for a novel published in the year 1865. The dedication is addressed to S. Squire Sprigge, Esq., M.D., and says it was Sprigge who first instructed the writer in the existence of the brain disease which forms the motif of this story.

A character named Mrs. Arundel is described as a woman of great sense, a practical woman, a woman of keen judgment, and tells Athelstan that what he tells her is beyond belief. The text says Mr. Dering was evidently much disturbed by what had happened, and describes him as a tall, thin, erect figure, gray-haired, austere of face. The text says Checkley was already in his master's room, laying out the table for the day's work as usual, and describes him as an old servant of sixty years' service doing these offices zealously and jealously.
