About this book

A narrator facing the end of his life begins by describing a vision of his final hours. His claimed ability to foresee events gives this story its unease: knowledge of the future becomes a burden within an already painful life. Looking back, he remembers his mother's tenderness, his fear of his stern father, and an education in science that sits awkwardly with his interest in human feeling and literature.

George Eliot brings this troubled perspective into family relationships and a visit to Prague, where a patch of coloured light matches a remembered vision. The narrator loves Bertha, who becomes engaged to his brother, while believing that she will eventually be his own wife. Published in 1859, the story combines paranormal experience with close attention to hesitation, longing and wounded pride. Readers interested in psychological fiction can follow the tension between what the narrator thinks he knows and what he feels in the present.
