About this book
The introduction traces an increasing number of concerns to the desire to avoid the oppression of the poor. The introduction says that concerns about paying taxes and entertaining soldiers were common to the Friends, while others were apparently inventions of the individual's own. The account connects the wearing of undyed garments with the harmful effects of dyes upon the worker.
The journal describes rain so heavy that water beat through a tent and soaked the travellers and their baggage. The travel account records fallen trees across the path and swamps through which the travellers passed with extreme difficulty. A reflection describes young people put aboard ships with sorrowful hearts and exposed to great hardships at sea.
