About this book

Young Augustin imagines kingship as permission to have whatever he wants, but his coronation places him inside a world of ceremony and strict household rules. Anthony Hope's novel lets the king look back on his own upbringing in Forstadt, where his mother, Princess Gertrude, and the formidable governess Krak shape his early understanding of authority. His sister Victoria's teasing and the heavy crown keep the public grandeur close to ordinary childhood.

As the narrative moves into his adult life, conversations with Coralie and the politician Wetter turn politeness into a contest of pride and influence. Augustin describes his own eagerness to win, while another observer sees a reserved ruler prone to sudden bursts of feeling. The appeal lies in that uneasy pairing of official dignity and personal impulse, told through a voice alert to the comedy of royal life.
