About this book

A young narrator approaching sixteen believes that he can remake his life through moral improvement, yet his daily habits resist his ambitious plans. Preparing for university in Russia, he worries about his appearance, struggles with algebra and looks to his friendship with Dimitri for a sense of purpose. A spring morning gives these private hopes a physical setting: melting snow, fresh air and an opened schoolroom window frame his efforts to act kindly.

Leo Tolstoy's autobiographical novel follows the shifting judgments and strong feelings of someone trying to become an adult. In a visit to the Nechludoff family, an argument over superstition exposes wounded pride beneath ordinary conversation. The narrator watches closely, finding meaning in gestures, loyalties and the difference between polished manners and family tensions. Readers interested in growing up and Russian social life will find a personal account of how ideals meet vanity, friendship and the complicated feelings of a household.
