About this book

A Man of Mark is by Anthony Hope. An epigraph attributed to Francis Bacon reads that a wise man will make more opportunities than he finds. The contents list names chapters called The Movement and the Man, A Financial Expedient, A Supper Party and Farewell to Aureataland, among others.

The opening chapter says that in the year 1884 the Republic of Aureataland was certainly not in a flourishing condition. The narrator says that in June, 1880, he had the pleasure of handing over to the President the five hundred thousand dollars. The narrator says he will never forget that supper as long as he lives, and that he never before or since sat at meat with ten such queer customers as his hosts of that evening. A dialogue has one speaker ask whether the other will marry her, get the answer Yes, and ask whether it is against her will.
