About this book
A young mongoose washed from his burrow finds shelter in a family's bungalow, then turns his curiosity toward the garden outside. Rikki-tikki-tavi's arrival opens this selection of Rudyard Kipling's prose and poetry. His exchanges with birds and cobras give the garden the tensions of a small society, where quick observation and trust shape each encounter. Domestic details, from meals to lamps, place the talking animals beside the everyday life of a household.
Other selections include stories about Mowgli and a separate section of verse. Bagheera tells Mowgli about his own past among people and warns that the wolf pack may turn against him. He calls fire the Red Flower and advises the boy to fetch it for protection. Readers interested in animal tales can follow the different kinds of friendship and authority within these scenes, while the mixture of short prose and poems offers a broader sample of Kipling's writing.
