About this book
A child on a cloud asks a piper to turn his songs into writing, setting the tone for William Blake's collection of verse. The opening includes Songs of Innocence, with shepherds, lambs, spring games and a mother's lullaby. These scenes carry religious meanings through familiar sights and sounds. Alongside them, a young chimney sweeper describes his work and Tom Dacre's dream, bringing hardship into the world of childhood.
Songs of Experience sharpens the questions raised by these images. In The Tyger, the speaker wonders about the power that could create such a formidable creature; in The Fly, a small accident prompts thoughts about life and death. The Garden of Love places a chapel and restrictive commands on a former playground. Short lines, repeated sounds and vivid natural figures make the poems useful for close reading, especially for readers interested in how faith, care and fear take shape in verse.
