About this book

Courtesy begins with attention to other people's comfort in Florence Hartley's 1860 handbook for women. Her introduction treats good manners as an everyday expression of kindness, then the chapters turn that principle into rules for conversation, visiting, dinner tables, travel and social gatherings. The distinction between sincere consideration and mere outward ceremony gives the manual a moral purpose as well as a practical one.

Hartley also connects social confidence with reading and intellectual cultivation. She argues that women need more than graceful appearances to take part in thoughtful company, while warning against gossip, boastfulness and exaggerated stories. Readers interested in nineteenth-century domestic life will find a detailed account of the conduct expected of hostesses, guests and young women. Its instructions also offer a way to examine how courtesy, education and social rank were linked.
