Published in 1838, How to Observe examines the preparation needed to study morals and manners, then identifies the institutions and everyday practices that deserve attention. Religion, markets, schools, newspapers, family life and social classes all enter her account of what an observer should investigate.
Martineau repeatedly warns against confident national judgments drawn from a few conversations or a narrow route through a country. Her discussion of admired public figures shows another method: studying whom a community honours can reveal its values and changing concerns.
