The Lani People is credited to Jesse F. Bone. The ad in the Kardon Journal of Allied Medical Sciences asks for residency in active livestock operation on a five-year contract with a renewal option, starting at 15,000 cr./annum with periodic increases. A character named Jac Kennon reads the box a second time and thinks there must be a catch to it.
A character named Alexander says that a contract is a screen that weeds out the careless, the fools, and the unfit in one operation. The text says the Lani were not human, but were intelligent and did have personality, and that it was hard to treat them with dispassionate objectivity. The text lists the normal farm animals as shrakes, cattle, sheep, morks, and swine, and says they were no problem. The text says Kennon shrugged, that there was no sense arguing, and that the only thing to do was make his plans and leave quietly.
