About this book
An alien medical graduate reaches a busy Earth airport with his future unsettled. Dal Timgar has completed years of training at Hospital Philadelphia, yet a summons to a council hearing takes the place of the insignia his classmates receive. Around him, hospital ships bring patients from distant star systems, some needing unusual gases or protective tanks. Alan Edward Nourse builds a science fiction novel around the practical demands of treating unfamiliar bodies and the barriers faced by a capable outsider.
Dal's friend Tiger offers support when other graduates keep their distance. A later encounter with Garvian traders tests a different kind of judgment: attractive gifts and generous-looking contracts conceal costly terms, and Dal warns his companions despite an offer of fine surgical instruments for himself. Medical ambition, friendship and professional integrity give the space setting a human scale. Readers interested in imagined hospitals and the ethics of expertise will find both in Dal's uncertain start.
