About this book
A mysterious Wind offers a narrator passage through time, and he chooses the future over the ancient world he has imagined through books. His first stop brings him to Birmingham, where an armed crowd listens to a leader who condemns industrial progress and prepares to march on London. Ten years later, that leader, Joshua Harris, rules a conquered world and announces a decree intended to prevent further births.
James Elroy Flecker combines this bleak political vision with a more intimate garden scene. Within its walls, companions read poetry, sing, play games and seek beauty while their enclosed community grows older and smaller. The contrast between public commands and private pleasures gives the story its unsettling character. Readers interested in early science fiction can find a short future narrative concerned with civilisation, suffering and the fragile appeal of an ideal retreat.
