About this book

Joseph Wimble is more at home with birds than with the plans his father makes for him. Educated at Charterhouse and Cambridge through his father's earnings as an analytical chemist, he is expected to make a suitable marriage and take a Grand Tour. Instead, he secretly marries the daughter of a Norfolk corn merchant. His kindness and generosity go with an instinctive way of understanding the world: flight, song, nests, and migration interest him more than formal reasoning.

In The Promise of Air, Algernon Blackwood turns that affinity into a speculative idea about human possibility. Air represents a higher existence toward which people might develop, and birds seem to possess a shared language of movement and sound. A scene on a London rooftop before dawn gives this idea a physical shape. As Joan dances among the chimney stacks, Joseph senses through her the awakening of birds across England. Readers drawn to nature and intuition can follow how ordinary family life opens onto an imagined connection with the wider living world.
