About this book
The Laws of Contrast of Colour, by M. E. Chevreul, director of the dye works of the Gobelins, covers their application to the arts of painting, decoration of buildings, mosaic work, tapestry and carpet weaving, calico-printing, dress, paper-staining and printing, among others. The book is translated from the French by John Spanton, in a new edition with illustrations printed in colours.
The text says orange, the complementary of blue, being added to green, makes it bluer or less yellow. The text says that when colours are not of the same depth, that which is deep appears deeper and that which is light appears lighter. A border of five inches and a half in breadth, representing roses with their leaves, is described as particularly useful as an example of the effect of two colours, red and green.
