About this book
Pigments, Paint and Painting, subtitled A Practical Book for Practical Men, is by George Terry. The introduction says that in days gone by the painter who served the usual term of apprenticeship was deemed to have done all that was required to qualify him for his trade. One described process for making lamp-black conducts the products of the combustion of any resinous matter in a furnace into a long flue.
The text says the trays and their contents remain in the heated atmosphere of the drying chamber for two or three weeks, by which time they become dry and ready for removal. The text says women are employed to fill and to empty the drying or stoving chamber, and that during this work they are fully exposed to its contaminating atmosphere. The text advises that cars should be washed well with a brush and water at the end of every trip.
