About this book
The Lenâpé and Their Legends by Daniel G. Brinton presents the complete text and symbols of the Walam Olum, a new translation and an inquiry into its authenticity. The account reports a tradition of the Cherokees concerning residence in the Ohio Valley, probably about the fourteenth century, and a claim to have constructed earthworks there. Delaware traditions recall portions of the Cherokees living on the Ohio and recount long wars with them.
The discussion of Rafinesque records severe criticism of his antiquarian productions, particularly the Ancient Annals of Kentucky. A note questions Dr. Abbott's proposed identification of a bird's head with the Lenape Turkey gens totem, conditional on Heckewelder's account that the mark represented only the bird's foot.
