About this book
The Religious Sentiment by Daniel G. Brinton is subtitled Its Source and Aim, A Contribution to the Science and Philosophy of Religion. The author writes that pain, as the sensation of waste, is the precursor of death, and that pleasure came to be the sensation of continuance, of uninterrupted action, of increasing vigor and life. The author says the connection of pain with waste is not a necessary one, but a simple result of natural selection.
The text says that all inspired men have commenced by freeing themselves from inherited forms of Belief in order that with undiverted attention they might listen to the promptings of the divinity within their souls. The notes cite, among others, Auguste Comte, Système de Politique Positive, Paris, 1851-4.
