About this book
Major Roger Sherman Potter, a Yankee character who tells of his exploits in war and politics, travels from Barnstable to New York, where aldermen and a mayor receive him with speeches and the landlord of the Astor chases him with a bill.
The preface says the hero speaks fairly good English rather than vulgar slang, unlike the usual eccentric American of fiction. Later chapters make the major a general at a banking house.
