About this book
François the Waif is by George Sand, translated from the French by Jane Minot Sedgwick. The prefatory note describes François le Champi as a pretty idyl that tells of homely affections and self-devotion. The note adds that the story is a rustic tale put into the mouths of peasants, who relate it with a primitive simplicity.
A conversation about art has one voice saying that art is not an invincible demonstrator and feeling not always satisfied by the best definition, and another answering that art is a demonstration of which nature is the proof. A man with a mill is shown knowing that his business would go to pieces if Madeleine no longer had the charge of it, because Sévère would not allow him to attend to the mill. A speaker addressing François says there is no husband, and speaks of treating François as a son and of finding him a pretty young wife, saying this is the speaker’s only wish.
