The Life of Abdel Kader, Ex-sultan of the Arabs of Algeria is by Charles Henry Churchill, and its title page says it was “WRITTEN FROM HIS OWN DICTATION, AND COMPILED FROM OTHER AUTHENTIC SOURCES.” A dedication to the Emperor of the French says the work celebrates the great actions and portrays the magnanimous character of one of the most remarkable men whom the Arab race has ever produced. After a few days at Alexandria, Mehi-ed-deen and Abdel Kader go on to Cairo and pitch their tents near the town, where Abdel Kader sees Mohammed Ali for the first and only time.
The text says Abdel Kader appealed to Marshal Valée against such monstrous infringements of his rights, and was told the Marshal had unlimited authority and could do what he pleased. A group that had offered to serve in the army was told its services were not wanted, and that it was to be subjected to a yearly fine of ten shillings per head.
