About this book
Three Frenchmen in Bengal, or The Commercial Ruin of the French Settlements in 1757, is by Samuel Charles Hill. The preface describes the account of the commercial ruin of the French Settlements as taken almost entirely from hitherto unpublished documents, and says its writer came across Law's Memoir in the British Museum. The English, not satisfied with recovering Calcutta, wish to impress the Nawab and send a small force to Hugli, which stormed the Muhammadan fort, burnt the town, and destroyed the magazines.
On the morning of the 5th of February, in the midst of a dense fog, Clive beat up quarters; Clive had to retire when the whole army was roused, though the slaughter amongst the enemy had been immense. In a first-person account the Nawab sends people to pull down the earthworks, and the speaker replies that so long as he was in the Factory no foreigner should touch his fortifications. The text reads that the English army, under Colonel Forde, was ambushed by the Dutch garrison of Chinsurah amongst the buildings and ruins of Chandernagore.
