About this book

Grey stone houses, factory smoke and the moors around Haworth establish the setting for Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell's biography of Charlotte Brontë. This first volume opens with a close account of the Yorkshire landscape and the parsonage, placing the writer within a community shaped by industry, church life and demanding weather. The attention to streets, buildings and household arrangements gives a concrete sense of the surroundings in which her family lived.

Letters bring Charlotte's own voice into the account. Writing to Southey, she describes her work as a governess and the difficulty of balancing teaching and sewing with her desire to read and write. His reply offers advice about keeping a quiet mind.
