About this book

The Poor Clare is by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell. The text carries an entry dated December 12th, 1747, in which the writer says his life has been strangely bound up with extraordinary incidents, some of which occurred before he had any connection with the principal actors in them. The writer says that to enter upon that strange story connected with poor Lucy he must begin a long way back.

The text says a man returned, with a sobered heart and impoverished fortunes, to his ancestral house, which had fallen sadly to ruin while the owner had been a courtier, a soldier, and an exile. A speaker says their father is a man of great wealth, that they never knew their mother, and that when they first remembered anything they were living in a great, lonely house with their dear and faithful Mistress Clarke. One of a group says he knows a man named Gisborne, aide-de-camp to the General-Commandant.
