About this book

The Life of George Borrow is compiled from unpublished official documents, his works, correspondence, etc. The preface says that during the whole of Borrow's manhood there was probably only one period when he was unquestionably happy in his work and content with his surroundings. The preface also says he may almost be said to have concentrated a lifetime's energy and resource into the seven years (1833 to 1840) that he was employed by the British and Foreign Bible Society in Russia, Portugal and Spain.

Borrow is said to have found at a bookstall a polyglot dictionary which pretended to be an easy guide to the acquirement of French, Italian, Low Dutch, and English. The text says Borrow had done all that a man was capable of to distribute the books, and that his reply was that it was unkind and unjust to taunt him with having been unsuccessful in distributing the Scriptures. A note says that in The Romany Rye Borrow takes his horse to the Swan Inn at Stafford.
