About this book

The Light of Asia is by Sir Edwin Arnold and is arranged in books, from Book The First to Book The Eighth. The contents describe the work as the Scripture of the Saviour of the World, Lord Buddha, Prince Siddartha styled on earth. The Prince, who took up his slate of ox-red sandal-wood, meekly replies to the Sage and draws the sacred verse not in one script, but in many characters. Viswamitra says it is enough and moves to numbers, asking for a numeration repeated till they reach the Lakh.

The text describes men with crowns blistered by the blazing heat, one of whom crouched in the dust and meted out a thousand grains of millet, eating it seed by seed. The text speaks of rending desire from where it clings with bleeding roots till love of life have end, and of a safe eternal peace that earthly joys and woes do not invade.
