About this book
The Secrets of the Self (Asrar-i Khudi) is a philosophical poem by Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal of Lahore, translated from the original Persian, with an introduction and notes, by Reynold A. Nicholson of the University of Cambridge, 1920. After a prologue, the contents list sections showing how the system of the universe originates in the Self and how the life of the Self comes from forming desires and bringing them to birth.
The introduction says Iqbal has read European literature and that his philosophy owes much to Nietzsche and Bergson, yet he thinks and feels as a Moslem. It names a companion poem, Rumuz-i Bekhudi, and sets out Iqbal's ideal of a world-wide Moslem fraternity. The verse is printed with line numbers, and one passage describes a philosopher who disbelieved in the material universe and turned to a world of Ideas. Footnotes explain names and sayings.
