About this book
Buddhist Psalms is a translation from the Japanese of Shinran Shonin, made by S. Yamabe and L. Adams Beck. The contents list names sections called, among others, Lauding the Infinite One of Paradise, Concerning the Great Sutra and In Praise of Prince Shotoku. The introduction says that the Jōdo-Wasan, or Psalms of the Pure Land, are a part not only of the literature, but also of the daily worship and spiritual life of Japan.
One numbered verse speaks of attaining that height which is desire for the ingathering of all beings into Paradise, and says we shall return again into this world that we may be Saviours of Men, which it calls the Gift of Returning. Under the heading Wherein with Lamentation I Make My Confession, a verse says the speaker seeks refuge in the true faith of the Pure Land, yet the heart has not been truly sincere.
