About this book

The Lion of the North by G. A. Henty is subtitled A Tale of the Times of Gustavus Adolphus. A speaker recounts how Wallenstein advanced into Pomerania and besieged Stralsund after driving the Danes from Silesia and subduing Brandenburg and Mecklenburg. The speaker says Lieutenant General Sir Alexander Leslie fought his way into the town with Scots and Swedes after the siege had begun.

Malcolm can scarcely repress a shudder when he sees the women surrounding him, all past middle age and animated by ferocious triumph. The women raise the captive into a sitting position and cluster around him, with some shaking their hands in his face. A captive retains his sword and dagger because his captors, in their haste, omitted to take the weapons from him.
