About this book

Nearly two hundred fishing boats take their orders from Manx Bradley as an evening's work begins on the North Sea. Among them is the Lively Poll, commanded by Stephen Lockley, whose crew haul heavy trawl nets, clear wreckage and prepare their catch through the night. Ballantyne makes the labour tangible through wet decks, sharp knives and the danger of even a small injury when medical supplies are scarce.

The fishermen's different attitudes to faith give this children's sea novel another subject alongside its practical account of fishing. Fred Martin puts his beliefs into practice and is liked by his companions, while others argue over the value of mission ships. A later scene follows men approaching one of these vessels for supplies, medicine or curiosity. The story offers readers a view of a working community at sea, with lively crew conversations and Christian service woven into its daily needs.
