About this book

Along the Thames, busy wharves and warehouses surround a quiet London street where shipping decisions have consequences for the people at sea. R. M. Ballantyne opens The Lifeboat with Bax, a young sailor called to the office of shipowners Denham, Crumps, and Company. Ordered to take the schooner Nancy to Liverpool, he warns that its worn timbers put the crew in danger. The disagreement gives this children's sea novel an immediate concern with responsibility as well as adventure.

A later scene moves to Saint Margaret's Bay, where a wreck brings boatmen, rescuers and anxious women to the shore. Bax studies the surf and carries a rope towards a rocky point, joined by Guy Foster, Coleman and other men. Alongside these urgent scenes, the narrator explains difficulties with earlier lifeboats. Readers interested in sea rescue can find a story that connects courage with practical judgment, and places the safety of sailors and passengers at the centre of its action.
